Arthur French Exalted Ruler
B.P.O. Elks Dunedin-Clearwater Lodge No. 1525

Dunedin, Florida 34698
Greetings:
One of the real pleasures of being sponsor of the Elks Lodges of Florida is the
ability, in this
small way, to be a part of the celebration of a significant anniversary of a
Lodge.
Both Clearwater and Dunedin Lodges were recognized for their services to their
communities,
their state and our country. Since the merger of the two Lodges,
Dunedin/Clearwater Lodge
has been able to effect an ever greater impact on the area.
How many veterans would be ignored, or left to feel they were unworthy, if it
was not for the
concern of the Elks? How many children have received help and direction by the
Elks so as to
make them better citizens? Who provides support for our military, such as the
Elks Army Of
Hope, when it is needed?
Those questions are all answered with a resounding, the Elks.
Yes, on your 75th Anniversary you can reflect with pride on your
accomplishments. But you must
always remember those accomplishments are simply a preview of what will be
achieved as new
challenges arise.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Robert Grafton
Past Grand Exalted Ruler

Dear Fellow Members,
Congratulations to everyone at Dunedin-Clearwater Lodge #1525 on the occasion of
your 75th Anniversary
in February.
As a member of our great Fraternal Order and of the Florida State Elks
Association which is
"CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE" this year. you have done what all
Florida Elks have been doing best for a century. That is, to have a lot of fan,
in raising a lot of money, to help
those, the less fortunate and in need throughout our communities- We do this
because we are members of a
charitable fraternal organization, consisting of American citizens, who believe
in God, honor the Flag of our
Country, cherish our family and friends and live by the cardinal principles of
our Beloved Order that is
dedicated to helping others because Elks Care — Elks Share.
Since our inception, we have fed the hungry, clothed and sheltered the homeless,
helped those in need, aided
those in distress and, in general, have provided for a better destiny and way of
life for thousands of
underprivileged adults and children in need of our help throughout Florida
because that is who we are and that
is what we do. Then, through the dedication and foresight of our past leaders
and through the continuing
generosity of Florida Elks, our Ladies, friends and our charitable works, and
with the help of a well-managed
Harry-Anna Trust Fund and the Elks National Foundation, we have developed over
the past ten years two
magnificent State Major Projects, the pride of all Florida Elks. Our Youth Camp
and Mobile Children's
Therapy Services will continue to MAKE A DIFFERENCE as we lead Florida Elkdom
into its second
century.
The Dunedin-Clearwater Lodge is certainly an integral part of helping to MAKE A
DIFFERENCE by making
all of this happen. May God Bless each and every one of you and your families,
may He continue to shed His
grace on Elkdom, may He ever protect our brave military men and women serving in
the defense of our
freedom and may God Bless America!
Sincerely and fraternally,
Frank J. Palladini, President

Art French, Exalted Ruler
Lee French. Aux. President
TO THE MEMBERS OF THE DUNEDIN-CLEARWATER ELKS #1525:
We are celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Benevolent and Protective Order
of Elks #1525
originating in Clearwater more than 75 years ago.
On this occasion we should all remember the noble work to which this Order is
dedicated. The
Clearwater Elks Lodge flourished for many productive and happy years and, it has
continued to
flourish since merging with the Dunedin Elks Lodge forming the Dunedin-ClearwaterElks
#1525.
Even though to some of us it was a painful time, the important issue is that we
are together, and
with all of your help we may continue for many years to come.
This commemorative booklet provides you with a history of the Charter and is
something we should
all be proud of. On behalf of the members of Dunedin-Clearwater Lodge and the
Ladies of the Elks,
whose help we could not do without, we say congratulations.
Let us continue to provide help to the needy; support our Orders major
charities; the Elk's
National Foundation and let us never forget our veterans. We will continue to
support our troops
and their families, and with the hard work of the Ladies of the Elks continue to
support the
Clearwater Little League Challenger Division. We honor our Police Officers and
Fire Fighters
while providing scholarship opportunities to the High School students and ROTC
participants
within the Dunedin and Clearwater school districts.
Let us all continue this great work as well as enjoy one another in the many
social events held at our
Lodge. It is a pleasure to serve such a nice group of people.
Fraternally,
ART FRENCH,
EXALTED RULER' 2004-2005
Sincerely,
LEE FRENCH, PRESIDENT

A History of the
Clearwater Elks Lodge #1525
On March 1,1929 upon application by Brothers J. S. Lanier, E. J. Lewis,
Phaen B. Derr and G. 0. Fussell a Dispensation was granted to form the
Clearwater
Elks Lodge. The original Charter was granted to Clearwater Elks Lodge #1525 on
July 11,1929 with the primary applicants being Brothers Earl Wilder, Paul
Randolph, Dr. Hamlin Groves, Ed Lewis, AI Rogers and C. N. Alexander.
A gala installation was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Ft. Harrison Hotel
and was attended by many State and National Officers of the Order. The
installation
was formally opened by Paul Henderson, DDGER.
The following officated at the installation: Grand Exalted Ruler E. U. Lewis -
J. A. B. Madden; Grand Esteemed Leading Knight, A. L. Cusson, Jr.; Grand
Esteemed Loyal Knight, J. E. Koerning; Grand Esteemed Lecturing Knight, Paul
Watkins; Grand Secretary, V. N. Ridgley; Grand Treasurer, E. N. Kelsey; Grand
Tiler, H. H. Whitney; Grand Chaplain, Judge J. 0. Viney; Grand^ Esquire, Watter
H. Donovan; Grand Inner Guard, R. L Gibson.
Officers installed were: Exalted Ruler, E. J. Lewis; Esteemed Leading Knight,
A. W. Cullis; Esteemed Loyal Knight, C. E. Ware; Esteemed Lecturing Knight,
Bascom D. Barber; Secretary, E. T. Stratford; Treasurer, W. S. Post; Inner
Guard,
R. L. Gibson; Chaplain, J. W. Williamson; Esquire, J. C. Brown; Tiler, Fred
Stroli;
Trustees, E. H. Coachman, A. J. Roderick and C. 0. Faircloth.
Exalted Ruler Lewis completed his term of office with the end of the Lodge
year to become the first PER of Clearwater Elks Lodge #1525. Brother E. T.
Stratford was installed as our first Secretary. He was soon succeeded by Brother
R. L. Neiman who served the Lodge until his death in 1969.
The temporary Lodge Home was located in a group of stores on the southwest
corner of Garden and Park. One of the businesses was the funeral home owned by
Brother C. N. Alexander and Lodge Room was in an upstairs room over the funeral
home.
In 1939 the Lodge moved to a house formerly used by the Clearwater Yacht
Club at the foot of Cleveland Street where the Maas Brothers parking lot was
later
located. There was a large dance hall located next door, which was utilized for
many
Lodge functions. The house had living quarters upstairs where Brothers Bill
Shaw,
R. L. Neiman and Al Rogers lived at various times.
The Lodge moved in 1945. After the purchase of the new property at 516
Franklin St., a large house formerly located just south of the Ft. Harrison
Hotel and
owned by Mr. Leland Drew, an uncle of Brother A. J. Rogers, was moved to the
front of the new site and served as the Lodge Home.
The first improvement was the addition of a Dining Room, Game Room, and
part of the upstairs Lodge Room. In 1963 the house was torn down and the Club
Room, Kitchen, the south end of the Lodge Room and the Anteroom were added.
Brother Art Simmons was an active member during the time of construction.
In his will Brother Simmons requested that his remains, after cremation, be
interred
in the foundation between the old building and the newest addition. His wishes
were
obeyed and his ashes rest in the wall between the first addition and the new
front of
the building.
As the needs of the Lodge changed, a new piece of property was purchased. In
September 1986, the new Lodge was completed on Sunset Point Road on twenty-two
acres of beautiful land.
The kitchen was added in December 1988, in time for their New Year's Eve
party. After the kitchen was added fish fries and spaghetti dinners were
enjoyed.
The Lodge was used for special occasions such as weddings, business meetings and
large parties.
Also, with the completion of the kitchen Lodge members, with the help of the
Auxiliary, were able to put on functions such as Holiday Dances, Theme Parties,
Pancake Festivals and other events to raise funds.
The West Central District Past Exalted Rulers' Association had a Testimonial
Dinner for Charles M. Pride at the Clearwater Lodge #1525 on May 15,1993.
Charlie, as we call him, is a Past Exalted Ruler (twice) of the Clearwater Lodge
and
a Past State President of the Florida State Elks Association. He also served in
many
other capacities in the Clearwater Lodge, Florida State Elks Association and the
Grand Lodge.
At the Testimonial Charlie was presented with a plaque from the West
Central District P. E. R. Association, a commendation from the Florida State
Elks'
Association, a Grand Exalted Ruler's Performance Award from the Grand Lodge
and a framed Harry-Anna Trust Fund Certificate puchased on his behalf by the
WCD P. E. R. Association.
We continued to support Florida Elks Children's Hospital, the National
Foundation, Florida Elks Youth Camp, Florida Elks Therapy Services, as well as
many local charities.
The idea of merging Clearwater with the Dunedin Lodge, forming a stronger
entity to better serve and support the community, came about during 2000. A
final
decision to merge was determined to be in the best interest of both Lodges.
The two Lodges became Dunedin-Clearwater Elks Lodge #1525 and officially
merged on March 19, 2001

A History of Clearwater
Ladies of Elks #1525
The Clearwater Ladies of the Elks Unit was organized in June, 1956 and
consisted of 132 charter members. A candlelight installation of charter officers
and
members of the governing board was held Wednesday evening, August 8,1956 in the
Lodge room.
After a short business meeting, Mrs. Phil McCabe, president of the Tarpon
Springs Lodge Ladies Auxiliary installed the following officers: Mrs. Nort H.
Davis,
president, Mrs. Robert H. Pride, first vice president, Mrs. James B. Kellerman,
second vice president, Mrs. Charles B. McDaniels, recording secretary, Mrs.
Ralph
B. Burton, corresponding secretary and Mrs. Ernest A. Green, treasurer. Mrs.
Nort
H. Davis introduced the members of her governing board.
The objective of the Club was to assist the Elks of Clearwater Lodge #1525
whenever possible in their projects; to unite the members in the bond of
friendship,
good fellowship and mutual understanding; to encourage active participation in
all
aspects of Elkdom that are permissible; and to contribute ten percent of any
fund raising project, excluding the 365 Club, to the Florida Elks Children's
Hospital;
and assist in such worthwhile projects of the community as the membership may
deem wise to undertake.
During the period of February, 1983 to June, 1986 monthly meetings were
held in the homes of Bernadine Pride and Jane Disbrow while they were without a
Lodge building.
Of the 132 original charter members in 1956 only five were active at their 30th
anniversary celebration: Margaret Aide, Alice Erdosey, Johanne Palmitier,
Bernadine Pride and Jean Pride. This celebration, held September 27,1986, was
the
first event to be held in the new Clearwater Elks Lodge #1525 located on Sunset
Point Road. Cleita Karns, President during this celebration, also wrote and
published Berlin Airlift, a historical, psychological thriller and contributed
greatly
to this brief history of the Clearwater Ladies Organization.
Following the 30th anniversary the Ladies continued to actively support the
Clearwater Elks and Florida Elks Children's Hospital and the Florida Youth Camp
until 1998.
Thank you to Beverly Messerschmidt, PLP of the Clearwater Ladies #1525
for her contribution to this history.

History of Dunedin Elks #2275 Clowns
In 1976 the Elks Grand Lodge issued the first charter for a Clown Organization
in an Elks
Lodge in the United States. Exalted Ruler Don Emrich obtained five interested
men to form the
clown group. The first officers were Donald Emrich, Chairman; Fred Bunnaster,
Vice Chairman.
Glenn Cox, Bill McCune, Terry Sage and Donald Witt were the remaining members.
Shortly after organization of the clown group the City ofDunedin gave the clowns
a surplus
fire truck, a 1947 International Tanker Truck, for $1.00 and a 100 year lease.
The lease was drawn
up by the Mayor and others ofDunedin. The truck was painted red and alterations
were made so
the truck could be in area parades.
The clown organization's mission was to raise money to pay the Lodge commitment
to the
Florida Elks Crippled Children's Hospital in Umatilla, Fl. These fundraising
events were to paint
faces and make balloon animals at mall openings, company picnics and other area
gatherings. The
group happily participated in many area parades. The Clowns held an annual
Halloween Party
which was always well attended.
The Clowns went to Umatilla to the Children's hospital twice yearly during the
Florida State
Elks Association quarterly meetings in February and August to entertain the
children. They took
the children gifts, painted faces, made balloons and just spent time with the
children and their
families. This was a truly rewarding experience for those able to participate.
In October of 1994, due to lack of members, the Clowns decided it best to
discontinue their
meetings until there was more interest. At this time the organization is still
not active, but not
forgotten. All it takes to get going again would be a few good clowns. What do
you say?

History of the Dunedin Elks Lodge #2275
In 1962, among Dunedin's about 8,000 population, there were many Elks.
There were Elks in Clearwater #1525 and Tarpon Springs #1719. Many were
"stray" Elks who were permanent residents maintaining their membership in their
home Lodge. Others let their membership lapse. There was a need to bring them
back into the Order.
Brother Harry Dishman placed a notice in the local news media to those in
the area interested in the formation of a new Lodge. About 16 men met at the
Caladesi National Bank on November 20,1962. From this group an Organization
Committee was formed. The members were: Harry Dishman, chairman; Abram
Morelli, secretary and John Roth, treasurer. Committeemen were Harry Beukema,
Donald Burns, Hans Gompertz, August Hahn and S. A. Davis, Jr.
Then contact was made with the New Lodge Committee chairman, who was
Special Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Robert B. Cameron. Bob was to become
affectionately known as the "Father of #2275".
Meetings of the Committee were being held in the conference room of Mease
Hospital. Under the direction of Bob, the plans and preparations led ultimately
to
formal Request for Dispensation. That request was granted by the Grand Exalted
Ruler L. A. Donaldson January 11,1963.
At two o'clock on Saturday afternoon, March 9,1963 in the Lodge Room of
Clearwater Lodge #1525, the ceremonials of institution, initiation and
installation
were performed by officers of the Clearwater Lodge #1525 and Florida's eighty-
second subordinate lodge - Dunedin Elks Lodge #2275 was born. The ceremonial of
Institution was performed by past and present Grand Lodge and Florida State
Association members from around the state. The official representative of the
Grand
Lodge was PGER William A. Wall of West Palm Beach.
Dunedin Lodge was instituted on March 9,1963 - just 22 days before the end
of the fiscal year 1962-1963. Therefore, it was understood that the officers
elected
were to be re-installed as the lodge officers for the year 1963-1964.
Those installed were: Exalted Ruler, Harry Dishman; Esteemed Leading
Knight, Ernest E. Homberg; Esteemed Loyal Knight, William L. Pollard;
Esteemed Lecturing Knight, John G. Ruegger; Secretary, Abram Morelli;
Treasurer, Robert L Williams; Tiler, William Staub; Chaplain, Herbert R. Dear;
Inner Guard, Irvin A. Hirschy; Organist, Clarence Jasmagy; Esquire, Charles W.
Seasholtz; Trustees: Harry Beukema, Chairman, Hans Gompertz, S. A Davis, Jr,
Donald H. Burns and August Hahn.
BPOE Lodge #2275 held meetings each Thursday in the Skyline Room of
McKowan's restaurant. Members soon realized the facilities were not adequate. A
committee was set up to expeditiously survey the entire area in an effort to
uncover
properties with potential to be a Lodge Home. The Lodge Trustees (and
membership) approved to negotiate the purchase of the Beatty residence at 1240
San
Christopher Drive. Lee Donaldson, PGER was the official representative of the
dedication of our Lodge home in June 1963. It has lent itself to expansion and
improvement over the years.
We continued to support the National Foundation, Florida Elks Children
Hospital, Florida Elks Youth Camp and Florida Elks Therapy Service. The Dunedin
Lodge has been active in community affairs such as; food baskets for the poor,
toys
for children seen by the Therapy Service, High School Scholarships, acknowledge
the
Cadets in High School JROTC, the local fire department, law enforcement officers
and Lou's Kids. Dunedin lodge has been faithful in its observance of all
ceremonial
services, both mandatory and optional.
The idea was formulated to merge the Dunedin and Cleawater lodges to better
serve both communities as a stronger and united body in 2000. A final decision
to
merge was determined to be in the best interest of both Lodges.
The two Lodges became Dunedin-Clearwater Elks Lodge #1525 and officially
merged on March 19, 2001.

A History of
Ladies of Dunedin Elks #2275. Auxiliary
The Dunedin Ladies of Elks was originally founded in April of 1963. There
were 29 charter members. Their purpose was to assist the Dunedin Elks #2275 in
their social, benevolent and financial affairs. After a few years the Auxiliary
experienced growing pains and was disbanded.
In 1974 the Auxiliary was reorganized adopting the new title of the Ladies of
the Dunedin Elks #2275, Auxiliary. The purpose of the Auxiliary remained to give
service to Elks Lodge #2275, serve the community whenever possible, provide a
joining outlet for the wives, widows, mothers and unmarried daughters of the
Lodge.
The Auxiliary purchased equipment for the kitchen and other parts of the
Lodge where needed, organized dinners, buffets and various money making events
in the Lodge. They also helped with the Lodge's various activities such as
parties,
picnics, visitations and other times when assistance was needed. The Florida
Elks
Children Hospital was the major project supported by purchasing Harry-Anna
Certificates.
As years passed the Auxiliary continued to fulfill their commitment by
sponsoring dinners, dances, raffles, yard sales, bake sales and other fund
raising
events. After the closing of the Children Hospital the major state projects are
the
Florida Elks Youth Camp and the Florida Elks Therapy Service. Our Auxiliary
supports these projects.
On the local level we sponsor a Little League team in the Clearwater Little
League Challenger Division made up of disadvantaged children in the Dunedin and
Clearwater area. We call the group Lou's Kids. Through our fund raising efforts
more children are able to play ball and become members of Lou's Kids. The
Florida
State Elks awards these children scholarships to go the Florida Elks Youth Camp
for one weekend each year. Their parents and coaches are able to attend with
them.
We also provide food and gifts at Thanksgiving and Christmas to make the
holidays a little happier for many. The Elks Children Christmas and Lou's Kids
Christmas Party are fun times for the Auxiliary as well as the Elk members. A
good
time is had by all at the holidays.
April 2001 we saw another change for our organization. With the merger of
the Clearwater and Dunedin Lodges we became known as the Ladies of the
Dunedin-Clearwater Elks #1525, Auxiliary. We remain dedicated to our previous
goals and we are proud to help the Lodge in the state and community projects
they
wish to undertake. With a renewed spirit of dedication we look the future.

A History of
Dunedin-Clearwater Elks #1525
The Clearwater Elks #1525 and The Dunedin Elks #2275 formally merged on March
19, 2001. This was a busy time for Officers and members alike to come together
as one
entity, as well as make plans for the future. The need was present to form a
bond between
the members of the two Lodges so we could truly become the Dunedin-Clearwater
Elks #1525.
A picnic was held to allow the members of both Lodges to meet and become better
acquainted. A great time was had by all in attendance. We all gathered outside
to form a
Fraternal Circle at which time the Exalted Ruler, Don Poling, made a plea for
all to become
re-dedicated to the work of the Order.
Our first year as Dunedin-Clearwater Elks #1525 went very quickly. There were
many items not needed for a combined lodge. It was decided to have an auction
which was
held at the Clearwater Lodge location. When the Clearwater Building was sold and
when
the mortgage was paid off, plans were made to build a new lodge.
The next step was the formation of a building committee to start the process.
After
much brainstorming several different ideas for the floor plan of the new
Lodge were
formulated. Blueprints were drawn up. Then a contractor was needed. The
committee has
had its work cut out for them trying to get all the permits needed from the City
of Dunedin
and Pinellas County. All actions of the committee must be approved by the
sponsor of
Lodges of the Florida State Elks Association and the Board of Trustees of the
Grand Lodge.
These processes are in progress and hopefully moving along.
Each year an Appreciation Dinner is held for the volunteers who have worked so
hard to keep the Lodge afloat. This is a time of celebration and giving of
awards to those
volunteers.
After Little League season is over an awards ceremony is held to give out the
trophies
the players have received for their participation. These children also go to the
Elks Youth
Camp for one weekend a year accompanied by their parents and coaches. A
scholarship has
been set up by the Florida State Elks Association to pay the fees for this
weekend.
The Elks take time to honor the achievement of the students and ROTC Cadets in
our
local schools. A dinner is served to the recipients of those awards and
scholarships, their
parents and teachers. A scholarship is given to a deserving student.
Also, we must remember our dedicated Law Enforcement Officers and Fire Fighters
in our community. A dinner is served to the Officer of the Year and the Fire
Fighter of the
year for their outstanding service. The dinner is attended by their families,
the Heads of
their departments and usually City Officials.
The last few years at Christmas time the members have participated in a parade
in
Dunedin. A trailer is loaned to the Lodge by Pfeiffer Towing and the members
decorate it.
They hand out candy and beads to the parade goers while wishing everyone Happy
Holidays.
The Children's Christmas Party is another event much anticipated by the children
as
well as adults. We have our very own Santa and Mrs. Santa to give out the gifts
to the
children. We also have a party for the members and families of our Lou's Kids
Little
League team.
Another important time is when the members go to the Baldomero Lopez Veterans
Nursing Home and serve them lunch. The residents enjoy seeing new people and we
enjoy
giving our time to make their days a little happier. The staff is always happy
to see us too.
The new Lodge is slow in coming into being. There is and old saying that "good
things
come to those who wait". We need the continued hard work and dedication of all
members
and the Auxiliary to get the job done.

A
History of the Ladies of Dunedin-Clearwater Elks #1525. Auxiliary
The Ladies of the Dunedin-Clearwater Elks, Auxiliary is dedicated to give
service to the Elks Lodge #1525, to serve our community and to provide a joining
body for those not ready to become a member of the Elks Association. We have
increased our membership with new members and have allowed Ladies that are
Elks to become associate members. Many of these associate members belonged to
the auxiliary prior to joining the Lodge and are familiar with our goals..
Our main purpose is to assist the Lodge in all of its charitable programs at the
National, State and in our local levels. Through our continued efforts to host
dinner
dances, buffets, picnics, assist with visitations, Taco Saturday, cookbook
sales, bake
sales and raffles funds are made available to support those programs.
As members of our Ladies Organization we belong to a much larger group
than that of our local community. Our Florida Ladies Elks Organization is
instrumental in providing much needed funds for the Florida State Elks
Association
major projects. The Dunedin-Clearwater Ladies Auxiliary sent seven of our
members to the State Convention at Altomonte Springs, Fl. this year. At this
conference we were able to see how our contributions help to keep the spirit
alive.
As officers and members of the Ladies of the Dunedin-Clearwater Elks,
Auxiliary, present and past, it is an honor to help the Lodge where we are able.
We
will continue to assist the Lodge in their charitable works, donate to the Elks
major
projects and be supportive where needed so the Elks goals will be accomplished.
